New from the Zoo - IT GOVERNANCE Perceptive - (Plutonic Zoo shares a perspective on a topical subject) Running IT like a business - the cobbler's shoes IT operations are enormously varied, and to maintain focus on the value IT brings to an organisation requires all activities to be controlled in a common governance regime. Methodologies, including ITIL and COBIT, help to provide a framework, but we should not be seduced by the method or 'best practice'. Actually implementing a suitable governance process in your own environment will give you 'better practice' and bring you business value. All services required by the business, including work requests, problem management, provisioning, and development projects need to be included in any prioritisation, measurement and management of overall demand. This control is an early phase of implementing IT Governance, and underpins the kind of compliance management and auditability that today's business environment increasingly requires. While IT has been automating business processes for a long time most IT operations management systems are like the cobbler's shoes: non-existent, or worn out and overlooked. Priority is given to serving the business, but it is rare for IT to measure itself on its contribution to the business. Given appropriate policy decisions and the means to implement them, an IT Governance process can align IT resource allocation to business priorities across organisational boundaries and strategies. The challenge for IT is to manage the range of different types of activities from business-as-usual to strategic projects, in a way that all activities are prioritised on delivering business focused results. Implementing IT Governance enables efficient and effective IT operations; aligns IT activities with the business so that they are of the highest value to the organisation, and gives business leadership the means to manage its IT capability.
