New from the Zoo - Getting Results with Contractors Perceptive - (Plutonic Zoo shares a perspective on a topical subject) Getting Results with Contractors - (Carrots, Sticks and Inspiration) For a long time work motivation for most people came from 'carrots and sticks'. From day to day the boss asked and people 'just did it'. Finding the right people or the right job was often a painful, but accepted process by all players. Not so anymore. Generations X and Y have brought a changed conscience to the workplace, regardless of age, and a belief that your work must be a reward beyond cash or status. Gone is the motivating influence of punishments or incentives. Inspiration is the new motivation. Contractors have a head start in this because they have always been closer to freedom of choice and following their own inspiration. IT contractors in particular may seem selfish when they accept work on their own terms, but as inspired workers they add creativity and thoughtfulness, efficiency and focus. When both employers and contractors choose and are inspired by the match there is only gain. The challenge is not in understanding the X or Y generation orientation, but in a discovery and matching process that elicits a common and continuing inspiration. Matching skills, personalities, and corporate culture with expertise, aspiration, and drive. This goes beyond job descriptions and resumes. Managing the common inspiration throughout the engagement, allows the manager to focus on defining the outcome and the contractors to focus on achieving it. Plutonic Zoo is focused on managing the common inspiration between clients and experts. We work solely with contractors, offering managed expertise to our clients, sourcing from a large pool. We believe it is equally important for our clients as for our staff that everyone involved is inspired by the work. It is hard to beat self-inspired teams.
